read moreStrikingly modern, steadfastly traditional and always surprising – Japan should be a must on everyone’s bucket list. The cities speak for themselves – cool, cutting-edge and accessible, while beyond the bright lights awaits natural beauty that’s every bit as awe-inspiring.
Japan has so many cities worth exploring, from the ancient shrines and lip-smacking street food of Osaka to the torii gates and graceful geishas of Kyoto. Then there’s the history behind Hiroshima and the frenetic, flamboyant street culture of neon-lit Tokyo.
The countryside isn’t bad either. Head north for snow in Hokkaido or far south to the subtropical islands of Okinawa. The Japanese Alps serve up champagne powder, freshly brewed sake and natural hot springs, while the snow-capped cone of Mount Fuji never looked more majestic than when viewed from the serene Lake Ashi.
So what are you waiting for? Whether you want to explore Japan by bike or prefer the modern comforts of the Bullet Train, and whether you wish to see all the big sights or venture beyond the tourist trail, there are so many ways to see Japan.
Japan is a year-round destination, so it’s down to personal preference. Cherry blossom season is justifiably popular in late March and early April, while May offers pleasant weather without the crowds, and the fall foliage of October and November is equally beautiful. Summer is hot, winter is a little cold, but both remain good options for off-season crowds and prices.
Definitely. We have several trips on offer in Japan that cost less than $5,000, with some as low as $2,000! That includes all accommodation, domestic travel and specified activities, as well as daily breakfast, plus some other meals (as noted in the itinerary). That just leaves the cost of your flights and travel insurance. You can tweak the Japan experience to suit your budget, but $5,000 is certainly enough.
The local time zone is Japan Standard Time (UTC+9). That means the time in Japan is 9 ahead of London, 14 hours ahead of New York and a whopping 17 hours ahead of Los Angeles.
Japan is fairly temperate all over, but as an archipelago that stretches long from north to south, few countries have such a varied climate. The north, especially the island of Hokkaido, has warm summers and very cold, snowy winters. Meanwhile the southern islands of Okinawa are subtropical, and the central islands are temperate, with four distinct seasons.

Japanese. There are also some other endangered minority languages spoken across the islands, including Hokkaidō Ainu on the northernmost main island and the Ryūkyūan languages, mostly heard in Okinawa and in parts of Kagoshima.
