Its summer and you’re undoubtably planning a holiday to make the most of favourable weather conditions. It is around this time of year when you have to seriously start planning how to explore glamorous destinations without running into too many crowds. Here are some of the top picks from the Culture Trip team from the many locations we’ve personally visited in recent years.

Klosters, Switzerland

Having recently celebrated its 800th anniversary, this must-visit Swiss municipality comes alive in the summer. Its a popular ski/winter destination, and neighbouring Davos is known on a global level, but a July trip to Klosters is a great option to avoid crowds and explore nature. Take full advantage of the excellent train network or drive here, something you can now do in an electric vehicle. In favourable weather conditions and after a few hours of trekking I even found a public foot therapy circuit which was an unexpected highlight. Simply take off your socks and shoes and make your way around a series of stops designed to improve circulation and cure any aches and pains in your feet. You can’t really do any of this in winter, so it was a rare summer treat that helped me decide to take a scenic walk back down to Klosters rather than a gondola ride.

Taiwan

Taiwan is a year-round destination and, as long as you prepare for the odd tropical shower, July is a great time to visit. This island nation off the coast of China is one of our top picks for 2025, thanks to its unique cultural blend, eclectic array of modern cities and enviable natural beauty. The rail network in Taiwan is exceptional and you can visit many parts of this destination from the comfort of a train carriage. There’s a little bit of everything here from cultural influences to international cuisine, and a growing number of travellers are taking the leap to explore.

San Luis Obispo - SLO CAL

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the world’s first motel opening along Route 66, in San Luis Obispo County, California. The Motel Inn started the American road trip culture and is an interesting tale of how the motel went out and has now come back into fashion. You’ll be hearing a lot more about the iconic road that runs from Chicago to Santa Monica over the coming months, but it might be worth visiting some of the stops on the way now. SLO CAL deserves more than a mere pit stop. Here, a different kind of California exists. True to its name, this corner of Cali is slow and sleepy, but still wine, surf and good times- focused. It’s got enviable hiking, diving and surfing, numerous wineries, sleepy boho villages and lively farmers’ markets

Tallinn, Estonia

Having visited Tallinn a few years ago, I was surprised to find that it hasn’t quite made it to the top of many European traveller lists yet. Its a short flight from many major airports on the continent and still offers excellent value for money even though it is modernising at a rapid pace. A new rail link is being constructed to connect Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania through the respective capitals of each Baltic country but in the meantime you can spend a great few days just in Tallinn itself. The Old Town is a charming medieval hub whereas a little further you’ll find relics to Soviet era rule. The food is excellent while budget-friendly bars have a welcoming feel. Many outdoor spaces open up in the summer and ferries to Helsinki bring in a younger crowd of partygoers. This is a fun place for a short break, especially if you want to visit a new country away from the usual suspects.

Ouarzazate, Morocco

Architectural Landmark, Historical Landmark

Surrounded by the vast Atlas Mountains, Ouarzazate is known as the ‘door to the desert’ and offers stunning natural landscapes, historic kasbahs and – as the Hollywood of Africa – the city’s backdrop has been featured in many movies and TV shows. It’s never been easier to explore an authentic Moroccan escape whilst avoiding tourist hotspots in July with a trip here. When I visited, direct flights from the UK had just began but as these are sporadic at best its worth exploring connecting flights from other Moroccan cities. The Atlas Film Studios are a major attraction, I bumped into Sir Ridley Scott when I flew into town. The British director is a regular visitor having filmed Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven in Ouarzazate and was back to film Gladiator 2. Aït Benhaddou – the historical UNESCO site of stone – was used in Game of Thrones which just adds to the cinematic allure.

Revitalising alpine air, cool nights, and a pure summer feeling with over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year, the Tyrol in Austria is the perfect summer holiday destination. Popular year-round, it’s renowned for its breathtaking mountain landscapes, charming alpine villages, gourmet dining, and its thrilling outdoor activities. The Tyrolean mountain villages of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis offer an exciting range of activities for all ages. Visitors can explore 500 kilometers of scenic hiking trails with crystal-clear mountain lakes, fragrant alpine meadows, and breathtaking viewpoints at over 3,000 meters above sea level. For a cool adventure on hot days there is the Hög Adventure Park featuring pedal boats, a custom-built diving tower, and a water maze. The 5* Scholsshotel Fiss is the perfect luxury holiday base from which to explore the region and offers the ‘super.summer.card’ allowing guests access to mountain lifts and hiking buses and to a range of active excursions including themed trails designed by Austrian children’s book author Thomas C. Brezina.
