The travel industry is at its busiest in August, particularly in Europe, where summer is at its peak. Avoid the tourist traps and enjoy authentic travel experience picked by Culture Trip’s travel experts.

Alberta, Canada

Having visited Alberta a few times I’m still always surprised by how pleasant the summers are. The vibrant and distinctive Lake Louise becomes a superb hiking route as opposed to the frozen mass it usually appears as in winter. The brilliant blue of the lake is engrained in the mind of anyone who has seen it and there are other lakes across the Canadian state that are worth visiting too. Banff is the iconic small town with incredible mountain views and then there’s the rest of the vast region which is bigger than many European countries. Take a road trip here to explore the Rockies or even better hop on a train and enjoy a laidback journey. Calgary might feel like an urban sprawl in comparison, but there are top notch dining options here too.

Aarhus, Denmark

Denmark’s second city offers a welcome respite from European summer heat and large tourist crowds. Aarhus is still full of great attractions from modern museums to historical neighbourhoods, but its the relaxed way of life here that really appeals to us. Begin with a visit to ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, renowned for its iconic Rainbow Panorama offering city views. Step back in time at Den Gamle By, an enchanting open-air museum featuring centuries-old buildings and immersive historical exhibits. Thrill-seekers can enjoy Tivoli Friheden, a lively amusement park perfect for families. August also hosts the Aarhus Festival, transforming the city with music, art, and performances. With mild temperatures its worth packing a light jacket for occasional rain and embrace Aarhus’s dynamic summer energy.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

As the Southern Hemisphere’s winter unfolds, the cooler temperatures in Buenos Aries create an ideal setting for exploring grand European-style architecture and tree-lined neighbourhoods. Dive into the city’s arts at the iconic Teatro Colón, one of the world’s finest opera houses, or browse avant-garde exhibits at MALBA, showcasing Latin American masterpieces. August also offers a chance to experience tango in its birthplace; catch an intimate milonga (tango club) or a professional show. Warm up with Argentina’s famed cuisine: savor succulent asado (barbecue) at a traditional parrilla or sip mate in historic cafés like Café Tortoni. Flights to Argentina are financially attainable too, so if you’ve been holding off on a trip to South America you might want to plan a trip in August.

Nairobi, Kenya

Ever thought about taking a safari but still need a little convincing? That’s the mindset I was in before I visited Nairobi a few years ago and the experience has convinced me to book a trip back and stay in the wild somewhere in Africa. Nairobi is a fantastic city full of busy markets, lively districts and acts as a perfect starting point for anyone looking to visit the country. Its a modern African experience but the real gem is the safari park in the middle of it all. I had dismissed this as one of those parks you get in the UK with sad looking animals hardly visible as you drive past in a Ford Fiesta, but I was in for a very pleasant surprise. You can see 4 of the traditional big 5 in the virtual wild and all with some of the high rise buildings of the downtown area still in the background. You’ll know from this experience if a safari is right for you, and all within a big city. If you get a daytime flight make sure you look out of the window as you can see some of the animals from the air.

Bali, Indonesia

August is an ideal time to visit Bali, Indonesia’s tropical paradise, as it falls within the island’s dry season, offering sunny days, minimal rainfall, and comfortable temperatures averaging 24–28°C (75–82°F). Hit the waves in Canggu or Uluwatu, where surf breaks are at their best, or dive into crystal-clear waters around Nusa Penida to spot manta rays and coral reefs. August also coincides with cultural festivities like Ganesha Chaturthi and temple ceremonies, offering glimpses of vibrant processions and traditional dances. Trek Mount Batur at dawn for a sunrise view over the island, or wander through Tegallalang Rice Terraces. Unwind on the white sands of Seminyak or Jimbaran Bay, where beach clubs and seafood barbecues thrive under balmy evenings. Other travellers might have the same idea, especially students on their summer breaks, so book this one early.
